3 Common Mistakes When Doing Affiliate Marketing

If you don’t know about affiliate marketing, you’re missing one of the most straightforward and easy ways to monetize your website. Period.

Here is a brief definition of this way to make money on the web: “It is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate’s marketing efforts.” (Source).

In other words, affiliate marketing works like this:

You become a member of a store or business → you promote that store or business (or products) on your website → when you have generated a sale or significant visit (depending on the affiliation agreement), you get money for it.

Amazon Associates is a classic example of a program for affiliate marketing. This program provides you with a unique code that you add when you link an Amazon product from your website so that you can earn money; up to 10% in sales commissions.

Although this sounds simple, I have seen more than one person frustrated when trying to generate income this way, and it doesn’t work immediately. But the problem is not affiliate marketing per se, but how it is applied in many websites.

Let me share with you some mistakes you should avoid at all costs if you want to monetize your website or blog this way:

1. Unaccurate marketing for your audience

The purpose of affiliate marketing is to make money by recommending to your audience products or services that relate to your site’s content and represent a value to them.That’s why it is counterproductive to fill your website with links to things that are not among your readers’ interests.

Although affiliate marketing has the advantage of adjusting to the audience’s interests, it is important to avoid filling your website with links to a store or product.

It is scientifically proven that by offering many options (and calls to action) to our readers and visitors, we have less useful results. People get overwhelmed and end up visiting our website without choosing to purchase something, or clicking on something in particular.

Therefore, it is much better to promote a few products or services through affiliate marketing and success, than saturate your website with lots of links that look unsightly, diminish your credibility and become spam.

Also, having an excess of affiliate links puts our website at risk of being penalized by Google -and as a result, fewer visits and customers through the most important and used search engine in the world.

Here are some non-invasive ways to make affiliate marketing on your website:

  • Write excellent reviews of products or services
  • Publish articles with product recommendation lists. (Example: 10 new books you won’t stop reading)
  • Mentioning products and conducting polls

Finally, be sure that your desire to monetize your content affect your content so that your site no longer useful and enjoyable for people who access it.

3. Become desperate with this way of monetizing

Don’t expect to get rich overnight with affiliate marketing. That probably won’t happen. However, if you start early and avoid the mistakes mentioned above, with time:

  • Your website will be bigger
  • You’ll have more links from your website to the store, business or product to which you are affiliated
  • And therefore, it will eventually produce more income if you keep your website in top condition

Affiliate marketing is a game of medium-long term

My best recommendation is that you maintain a proper perspective of what it means, realizing that to improve your results it is important to be constant, work on your credibility (which will result in greater success when recommending a product or service) and increasing the size of your website.

In my case, I can say that my first few weeks doing affiliate marketing were not very successful. In fact, at first glance, all seemed a failure. But after a few months, the numbers have been increasingly growing.

4. [BONUS] Have affiliate marketing as your only income

It is a waste of resources to own a website in which you can easily do content marketing and not taking advantage of it but is also a bad idea not expand your ways to generate income.

There are at least 60 different ways to make money with a blog. So if you want to succeed earning money online, it is not wise to stake everything on a single technique. In fact, most successful blogs generate income in various ways.
